Welcome to my blog for SWE! Here’s a little intro about myself:

  1. Where did you grow up?

I moved around a lot when I was younger (Massachusetts, Maryland, Washington, Tennessee), but I’ve grown up in The Woodlands, TX since 2007 so that’s where I would call home!

2. What high school did you attend?

I attended The Woodlands College Park High School.

3. What was your favorite extracurricular activity in high school?

I would say my favorite extracurricular activity in high school was Marching/Concert band where I played percussion. I didn’t love how time consuming it was, but I came out learning a lot of skills that I’ve carried with me since and I’ve made some of the greatest friends from it.

4. Why did you come to UT?

I came to UT because I knew it would be the best bang for my buck in terms of education. It’s close to home, has a great academic program, and relatively affordable with in-state tuition!

5. Why are you majoring in CS?

I originally came to UT to major in Chemical Engineering, but found the material very dry and pretty uninteresting. Ultimately, I decided to transfer into CS where I had previous experience coding and wanted to learn more about tech, especially living in this digital age that we’re in! I can safely say that I have absolutely no regrets transferring and feel excited every day to learn new things in my courses and feel like I will ultimately be able to go into the workforce and contribute something meaningful to society with the skills that I’ve learned.

6. Why are you in this class?

I really wanted to take this class to learn some practical skills and have hands on experience with a similar toolchain that I would be expected to know going into an actual software engineering role in the workforce. I think this would supplement the more theoretical knowledge that I’ve learned from my other classes well and will help prepare me for my upcoming Summer internship. I’ve also never built a full stack app before and I’m really intrigued to learn all the ins and outs of it.

7. What are your expectations of this class?

I’m hoping to come out of this class being able to utilize several different tools/languages/technologies that are relevant and useful to know going into a software engineering role. I expect this class to demystify a lot for me in terms of creating a full stack application, so that I can eventually recreate one that is advanced and dynamic for my own uses in the future.

8. How much Javascript/Python/SQL/Web programming do you already know?

I have coded a few programs in Javascript and Python and know the basics of SQL, HTML, and CSS. I have a general idea of how to create a website using these tools because I’m currently working on a web app right now for my current Fall/Spring internship, but would not consider myself proficient by any means. I definitely google how to do things a lot.

9. How did you like the two lectures?

I thought they were great. I think Professor Downing explains concepts extremely well and makes it very easy to understand! I really enjoyed learning about Docker because I have been wanting to learn more about how to use it in the past and have experimented with it a bit, but Professor Downing was able to clear up so much of my confusion.

10. How did you feel about the cold calling?

I get a bit anxious during cold calling because of how large the class is, but I’m wanting to get over my fears of talking in front of large groups and I think it makes me pay attention more in class so I don’t mind it!

11. What made you happy this week?

Hanging out with several friends this week at home and in Austin. And also eating good food! So many great laughs. I almost forgot how good it feels to be in the company of other people because of the quarantine! I’m hoping things can go back to normal soon.
