CS371p Spring 2022: Lilia Li
- Where did you grow up?
I moved around a lot when I was younger (Massachusetts, Maryland, Washington, Tennessee), but I’ve grown up in The Woodlands, TX since 2007 so that’s where I would call home!
2. What high school did you attend?
I attended The Woodlands College Park High School.
3. What was your favorite extracurricular activity in high school?
I would say my favorite extracurricular activity in high school was Marching/Concert band where I played percussion. I didn’t love how time consuming it was, but I came out learning a lot of skills that I’ve carried with me since and I’ve made some of the greatest friends from it.
4. Why did you come to UT?
I came to UT because I knew it would be the best bang for my buck in terms of education. It’s close to home, has a great academic program, and relatively affordable with in-state tuition!
5. Why are you majoring in CS?
I originally came to UT to major in Chemical Engineering, but found the material very dry and pretty uninteresting. Ultimately, I decided to transfer into CS where I had previous experience coding and wanted to learn more about tech, especially living in this digital age that we’re in! I can safely say that I have absolutely no regrets transferring and feel excited every day to learn new things in my courses and feel like I will ultimately be able to go into the workforce and contribute something meaningful to society with the skills that I’ve learned.
6. Why are you in this class?
I really wanted to take this class to learn some practical skills and have hands on experience working with C++ which is a language I’ve never used before as well as brush up on my OOP knowledge. I think this would supplement the more theoretical knowledge that I’ve learned from my other classes well and will help prepare me for when I start work as a full time SWE next Summer.
7. What are your expectations of this class?
I really want to come out of this class being able to apply the concepts of writing beautiful object-oriented code with ease to all of my projects.
8. How much C/C++ do you already know?
I have only ever coded in C from taking OS and haven't had any experience with C++.
9. How did you like the first lectures?
I thought they were great. I think Professor Downing explains concepts extremely well and makes it very easy to understand! I really enjoyed learning about Docker because I have been wanting to learn more about how to use it in the past and have experimented with it a bit, but Professor Downing was able to clear up so much of my confusion.
10. How did you feel about the cold calling?
I get a bit anxious during cold calling because of how large the class is, but I’m wanting to get over my fears of talking in front of large groups and I think it makes me pay attention more in class so I don’t mind it!
11. What made you happy this week?
I went skiing in Park City, Utah for the first time and I had a great time learning and really enjoyed the sport!
12. What’s your pick-of-the-week or tip-of-the-week?
Try learning a new skill!
